Steels - A New Character!

I already wrote the whole saga about the happenings around the Steel Industry from the start of this year. Now, add some more spice!

A new character comes into this story. It is Severstal (well, another LARGEST Russian steel maker) and Alexey Mordashov(Picture) - He has like 90% stake on Severstal! Severstal has been trying to make a statement to the world because it really wants to become big in the coming years by doing some acquisitions all over the world - Where else than the remaining BIC of BRIC & somewhat in US too. So, what is this character's role in this story? Acquisition - He is a strong competitor against Mittal Steel, in bidding & taking over Arcelor.

So if at all this deal works out, then it seems Severstal will become the sole leader above Mittal Steel, like 70 Million Tonnes of Steel Output per year against Mittal's 60 Million. BTW, if Mittal succeeds in its hostile takeover bid on Arcelor, it is going to roll out like 100 Million Tonnes. So, you do the math how much Arcelor is sending out:)

Is this deal for sure? Even this is dancing on the wall. Guy Dolle, CEO of Arcelor is worried because more than 50% of the Arcelor share holders need to vote for the deal. We wait & watch!

Tamil Googling & Ground Strip:)

Thanks to Vijay & Nish for the Video links.

I'm not sure if Google is really giving its search text database information because we know they fought the US Feds against it. I got no idea about this Current TV or the stats on this video. But, it sure is something interesting to know some stats & details about Tamil Googling and some related WebSites. Nice Video!

You can dive in a field with all great commitments to catch the ball. But you better make sure, there is no embarrassment:) Check it!

Who Owns The Net?

Until now there have been no issues on this. But this is becoming a bit more than hot in North America! The question is who owns Internet?

There is really no owner at the providers end. I mean, can we consider the whole new section of internet writers/editors called Bloggers also as owners?! So, everyone in this world is a owner and effectively noone is. The readers are not as they are already paying for their internet browsing. So, it's the deliverers - the Internet Service Providers (dial up, DSL & Cable providers) are in a bit of advantage position because they carry the bits & bytes. Are they really?

Well, they say it and now they feel they got to take control of the whole traffic that pass through their cables. They want to make things work like this - Ask the biggies in the business like say MySpace, Google, Yahoo, MSN, WalMart et al. to pay a price money, a commission kind of, to deliver their web sites faster to the end readers while the others like my blog site will take its own sweet time to reach a reader if asked for because am not going to pay for the service. So, the courier service wants to take money at both the ends! The word behind this fight is Network Neutrality. Their strong argument is they would improve their service to the customers by enhancing the delivery infrastucture like the cables etc with the new set of funds that can flow in from the providers. Well, the decision is now in the hands of the US lawmakers!

I'm not in agreement with the delivery boys! They are already exploiting the end user market and I guess, they have enough funds already built over all these years & still increasing to improve their infrastuctures. But, may be this issue can be settled with a new outlook - Like the providers and the end users share the expense along with the delivery boys. Every bit into the net costs. Everytime a site is queried costs the provider. End users pay hourly or subscription based. Deliverers pay based on the amount of sites queried. Did I pull too much off the air:)?

An Air's Sneak Peek!

"with the knowledge and direction of the highest management levels of WestJet"
read one of the statements from WestJet -Canada's biggest low cost airline apologizing for their act of 'peeking' into Air Canada's database during the period of 2003 & 2004. And it seems this went on till Air Canada discovered & revealed!

If a company can get access to their competitor's database and website just by using one of the competitor employee's used id & password, then for sure they can misuse to the maximum possible extent - Like in this instance, log into Air Canada's reservation database, take advantage by having lesser & competitive ticket prices for WestJet's passengers and understand Air Canada's plans for new routes & how to optimize revenue on existing routes. But is this the ethic that is to be encouraged by the management of any company or is this something specific to Air Industry or may be this is a specific seperate incident? Competition is good but unethical behavior should never be accepted - I mean, a cash compensation of C$235mil or anything more than that can't compensate the act.

Something funny around this is, this line from Financial Times (FT.com)

Air Canada acknowledged hiring a private investigator to gather evidence against one of WestJet's co-founders by sifting through his domestic garbage.
Looks like confidential information of companies can be grabbed out of the executive's domestic garbage:)

Is Bay Becoming Soft?

I'm not sure how much more this is going to get interesting! Here are the players of the deals which were making things HOT last week - Dell, AMD, Intel, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, eBay! So, what now? Microsoft is intending to buy up eBay! How far is this news/rumour true?

At one end, I feel Microsoft is not able to fight the fight with Google and hence, is going for all the mergers - Taking down all the possible competitions and the possible new innovations with it.

At the other end, it's like Microsoft is making very bold moves and trying to make all the impossible things possible - If it is about the advertising market, it'll try to do anything and everything to get MSN going without any hurdles. It tried AOL and there was this news about Microsoft trying its hands on Yahoo. And now, its eBay. If at all this merger happens, then the other two eBay's driving units - Skype & PayPal - will walk along with MSN. Is eBay ready to offer its helping hands and put itself underneath the MSN logo?

Any new insights on how this is going to change the market? Is Yahoo's deal with eBay going to show some difference?

Pole, Strip Off & Frustrations!

Some things of notice at the Monte Carlo F1 Grand Prix

  • The good thing is inspite of standing at the back end of the grid, Michael & Ferrari turned out to end inside the top five spots - A small & tough fight at the end with his ex-teammate and current Honda seater Barrichello. That was sure a show of tough sportsman & a entire team effort.
  • The bad things were when Webber (Williams) & Kimi (McLaren) walked out from the race with their cars choking & smoking, leaving their 3rd & 2nd positions respectively in the race. Just shows the reliability of the vehicles. If you try more than what they are capable off results aren't going to be good.
  • So, the best thing to happen because of the above 2 is Alonso & Renault (yet again) winning this race without pressure & competition.
  • Well. The worst thing is Michael's stripped off Pole Position. The punishment for hard braking and slowing down the circuit traffic and (coincidentally) that of Alonso's in the qualifier makes Michael a very poor sportsman.
  • And the satisfying thing is Red Bull at the podium - Thanks to Coulthard & all the above happenings.

Flying Tops - Call them!

People want to drive around in Convertibles! But they never want to see their tops fly around while driving :)!

Well, if you haven't heard, it's the talk about Corvette and it's roof flying off!? (Picture from Bloomberg.com)I guess, General Motors don't need this recall at this point of time especially when everything has been going down all around them and the latest set of the hot car in the market being pulled off - 31,000 2005 & 2006 models are the targets! And the reason behind this is 21 cars let their roofs fly off :)

"With those models, the frame of the roof is magnesium, and there's a composite plastic that gets painted that's attached to (the roof frame) with glue," Adler said. "The glue's not holding."-- Courier Journal Quoting GM spokesman Alan Adler!
This is something of notice. Because, with the same glue cause, it seems they have already made a recall earlier this year giving the effects as leaks, wind noise & others. What the heck! If the problems of the glue are already known, won't they do some more research & take some precautionary measures!!??

Chinese & other Asian markets are looking forward to American Cars for quality & reliability, as they always have been. Things are getting a bit rusty here and I guess, American Cars are not the same anymore!

'Nothing' To Your Eyes...

Just by seeing this picture(From PhysicsWeb.Org) in the left, can you guess something? The picture exactly represents the research conclusion by John Pendry, David Smith and David Schurig which is the talk of today (Once again, I got to make sure I acknowledge & credit the persons & sites for the info)! Assume you are standing to the left of the picture, the bright red spot is a light source and the brown circle is a rod. What do you see?

Still guessing? Alright, one more hint! What is the speciality of 007's Ash Martin in the movie 'Die Another Day'? You won't see, even if it stands right in front of you! Invisibility, to be precise! The blue coating around the rod is the 'MetaMaterial' - A Composite material with unusual electromagnetic properties. What the research explains is this MetaMaterial has a Negative Refractive Index - Capacity to bend the light in the opposite direction. As you can see from the picture that the material is bending light so that the waves can go back in the same direction as it was travelling before they hit the rod inside! So, when you are standing to the left of that picture, you won't see the rod...That's cool stuff!

As of now everything is on theory and there is long time to get things 'ready' for our eyes!

Allow Someone To Die?

The controversy is riding all over the adventure that added popularity to Mark Inglis. Inglis is one person who you can look forward to if you are depressed in life - A double amputee who takes on all kind of adventures. And the latest one is his climbing over Mt. Everest. That sure is one great achievement and he sure deserves appreciation. But...

This news story has a negative end too. Besides other sad stories that, may be some of Inglis's frost bitten fingers have to be cut, the story that is creating some heat is that one of the climbers David Sharp, is allowed to lie & die in the snow just 300 meters below the summit. And the debate behind that is, Can we accept this action of these 40 climbers?

Just thinking about the circumstances - One person is dying, completely frozen, not enough of oxygen for everyone to climb up & go down, Sharp has completely lost all his energy that he is just able to move his eye lids - Is it still justifiable? Can any reasoning back up this act? These can be some general questions. But, the things that hurt - "From a humanitarian stand, do you think saving a man is important or reaching the summit? If nothing is possible, isn't it human nature to spend time till the dying soul departs?"

I'm not a mountaineer or a climber and have no idea about how it feels and what the environment will be. May be, what the climbers did is correct! At one end, Inglis is a hero:)! But at the other, he is one of the soldiers who left his fellow soldier to die in the battlefield:( And the debate continues!

WMP - A New Definition!

If you still think WMP stands for Windows Media Player, may be its because you just didn't realize that Microsoft has come up with a new definition! Not much of change though because the new word is Photo instead of Player - Windows Media Photo. This is currently up & running with the Windows Vista Beta version.

So, what is different & what's the advantage? They just want to switch over from the old JPEG format to this new WMP format without losing the value of the photo itself. My understanding is, this is going to compress the digital pictures 1:25 around twice more than that of JPEG, and hence taking less space. Microsoft ofcourse has defined the specs too. Any idea, what this 'continuous tone' means?

Is this going to revolutionize the image compression market? I feel its just another 3 letter alphabet that gets added to the never ending list of so called Image Formats - JPG, JPEG, GIF, TIF, TIFF, BMP, PNG, WMF, EMF, PICT, PSD, SVG (uffff...) Is that it? I'm sure, I have missed some more:)

Dude! Its Delloogle...

Dell is sure shifting gears! The first step was towards AMD from Intel and now a focus shift to Google from Microsoft! Well, its not exactly a focus shift per say, but it sure is taking away some of the users from Microsoft. Here goes the news - Google To Put It's Softwares in Dell PCs!

If Google Pack is installed by default in any Dell Desktop or Notebook, then what we are looking into, is the same scenario just like the issue that cropped up a few days back on Internet Explorer 7.0 beta's small corner text box - Slowly take the users towards you by setting some of the default options.

I guess, the default browser is going to be FireFox with the default search box of Google. If at all, people turn back to Internet Explorer then the Google toolbar will show up:) When talking about Google Pack, we know for sure that Google has made an intelligent move by making GVP (Google Video Player) an optional product - Ofcourse, who wants to get into the same legal issues as Microsoft with its WMP? Hmm...Google Earth is just for making statements to MapQuest, Yahoo Maps & the new MSN Local Live!

Is Google Pack a start? Are we looking forward to something more? Somthing "bigger"? I'm not sure, but it looks like we may soon end up with an OS from Google! Is it just smoke or there is fire beneath?

Whatever it is! BTW, how or why did AdAware Personal find a place inside Google Pack?

You Better Sleep:)

I guess there has been one person for past 15 years who has lost his sleep to understand something about sleep:) Well, that is Dr. S Patel from Care Western University, Ohio. The research is on sleep & its loooong term effects on body weight!

Here is the conclusion and the numbers! The sample size is a lot around the range of 70,000. The samples are compared for more than like 15 years - The basis for comparison is a daily Good Night's Sleep around 7 hours and the opposite of daily less than 5 hours sleep! So, in the long run, 16 years is a bit toooooo long I guess, the bad sleepers are 30% (only?!) more likely to increase an average weight of like 33 lbs! Well, the conclusion is for Women because 70,000 number represents that section! No idea if that can be directly correlated for a man. Whatever it is. Such kind of researches get more than too much attention in this health (Slim, Diet, Fitness, Low Fat, Saturated, Trans etc) concious US market! But, the thing to notice is this research conclusion is a bit different than the general thought process! Isn't it? People usually think sleeping long hours will just increase the flabs & flesh!

I guess it's better to enjoy a peaceful sleep than to worry about becoming fat or slim:) What say, ahnn?

Some Digests!

Cards For The Runner!

I have never cared about Horse Races! The news making for past 2-3 days which is almost similar to that of the movie SeaBiscuit, though hasn't given me insights into the actual racing but God, they do show all those emotions that flow around the racing, the horses, the jockey and others!

There has been a lot of news coverage for Barbaro, the horse which actually got injured in one of the Big races. It seems, this is THE favorite for winning Triple Crown for this year (I got no idea what that represents & I didn't intend to find it)! So be it! But the amount of sentiments the news actually talk about around this incident - Sadness, Anger, Fear & What Not! I know, people do lot of betting on the horses but just couldn't understand all these feelings people are pouring over from all over the world ?!?

A quickie from Jay Leno yesterday night that people are sending cards & flowers from all over the world to this horse - Lol! Yeah! Give the cards to the horse! It can atleast try to digest all those morale boosts - Well, in its stomach!

Call It PodoMeter?!

What do people think when they work-out? It's obvious I guess - People besides being lost in thoughts on their day to day tensions, always want to know how much calories they had that day and the previous and how much they are burning of that at that point of time:) But, just think about someone running on the road - It's tough to get the information on calories right away! They would have to do some math later with the miles ran and probable calories burnt!

Nike is exactly trying to work on that market! Why Nike? The rubber burnt knows the distance ran! But, how will it make sure the information is known to the owner when he/she is running? What else is a better option than the cool gadget that every runner carries these days iPod! Nike shoe sole will carry the special sensor which will send details like access time, distance, pace and calories burned to the wearer's iPod Nano ear phone!

Though this is a very small market to talk about, I mean someone wearing the specific shoes of Nike, carrying iPod Nano and using both of them for their running work out, we may be talking about a bigger market because both those products fall into that category of lifestyle called Cool! I guess, people will be more than willing to throw some 30 bucks to enjoy the coolness of both these products! Won't they?

What? Another Country?

Hey! Do you know that we have a new country in the Atlas from Yesterday? I guess, they just got formed and joined the European Union!

I know of people in India who fight for a seperate state because they think they represent a seperate community in their own state! They feel they need a new administration! Like all the new states of Uttaranchal etc. People in Andhra are still fighting for special recognition like the telangana region people. So, when we have got such kind of fights for recognition as a seperate State going on in different countries, we still have people who want to recognize themselves as a seperate country and split themselves from?? - Its Yugoslavia & Serbia!

We can't say exactly the people want that because only 55.4% of the total population of around 650,000 people voted for it. But, that percentage is just enough because European Union set 55% voting as the threshold to recognize the new country. So, the new country is Montenegro and its Prime Minister is Milo Djukanovic. So, what this means to the EU & the international community?

More administration and more administrative resources. Hmm, probably one more headache for Europe. People trying to find a citizenship between Serbia and Montenegro! More trade pacts & agreements - For importing, exporting, crossing over, gas lines & pipes! What not! The currency to use - Guess, they are already using Euro without EU's acknowledgement instead of Serbia's Dinar.

It's a whole new geography, history, economy & politics!

A Fall Of Wal!

Can there be a market where people don't want to buy products cheap? I mean, when the basic business model is 'Everyday Low Prices' and if the retailer does stand to deliver that, how can it end up not making profits?

It sure is an interesting news for me when I read that WalMart is selling all of its business stores in South Korea because it couldn't make profits.

Where did WalMart fail in making a judgement about its stores & sales in South Korea? WalMart has been a customer of Seoul for quite sometime taking exports like toys, apparels & home textiles. And so they especially should have a pretty good understanding of the market - Because I firmly believe WalMart is one store which has really exploited the cheaper nature of the public (I don't want to discuss what nonsense they do in the backend)! I really would like to know how this market is different & what went right/wrong here??!! Any insights?

When the driver of RFID industry, the leader of retailers - who have everything going on track as they want in US - is not able take control of the South Korean market because of the local leaders, I just wonder if such weakness of WalMart can be exploited by other local leaders too? Just see the amount of international investments WalMart is making now a days.

In March, Wal-Mart said it had lifted its ownership to 51% in Central American Retail Holding Co. and renamed it Wal-Mart Central America.
The retailer also has made two other strategic international purchases, boosting its holdings in Seiyu Ltd. to 53% and lifting its market position to No. 3 in Brazil with the acquisition of Sonae Distribuicao Brasil S.A.
--MarketWatch
Are they in the right track? Can they be stopped from becoming a leader in other markets too?

PC... On The Go

Is there a time when you felt like "Why do I have to pay for some extra feature in the software when actually I don't intend to use it?"? Like for instance, let's take the simple example of Microsoft Office - Where you may not need Publisher at all, but the price tag includes this extra feature.

Let's think this in a different perspective - From the concept of buying song! People don't want to hear all the songs in an album but they didn't have the choice before. Now the case is different because every single song can be bought! So, why not link this strategy into the computing world! Buy what you want, whenever you want and when you can!

That is the next stage for Microsoft to go ahead on after its Windows XP Starter - The ripped off version of Windows! If you have heard of FlexGo, then you sure know what I'm talking about! The working is simple - Buy a FlexGo PC for half of its cost. Then, pay as you use it - May be some timely rate for the hardware use and add the cost of specific softwares used within that whole hardware usage time - and eventually, you end up owning the PC for yourself after those small payments cross over the balance amount to be paid for the PC. The funny thing that immediately occurs to me is, people will try to work on as minimum number of windows and will close as many software applications/windows, as soon as possible :)!

This is just another 'On Demand' market - Like the prepaid minutes of Cell Phones where it is essential that the handset is bought but buy the minutes only if you want to talk! Use it if you want and only if you can! If you don't want to pay for the service, don't use it! There is no monthly fee assigned to it (Though this option too is worked out!). This is exactly what a middle class or lower middle class individual will look for. (S)He doesn't want a PC to be forced onto him/her without a choice! (S)He wants to use a PC of his/her own choice, with a decision to use it or not! Even today in India, I know people buy prepaid coupons to activate and continue using Internet in their houses. So, FlexGo is going to be pretty much similar.

Microsoft is trying to focus this product into the emerging markets of developing countries. The product & its associated business has already been trialed out in Brazil and the RIC out of BRIC countries & Mexico are the next set of testing grounds. It looks like the cost aspects are still being worked out based on the country's market, their currency value, inflation, interest rates etc.

So, where do we see issues? Processor & Chip – The clock inside should be tamper proof so that the time of use of hardware/software is billed as required. Well, the billing system should also be part of the system so that if the payments are defaulted the user shouldn’t be able to use the system – Automatic Shutdown! Lol! Microsoft won’t have problem in that – Crash, Shutdown, Reboot and Blue Screen :))! So, is it going to be Intel or AMD? Rumors say AMD and its 50X15 Digital Inclusion Initiative! Can anyone shed light on this 50X15 model?

Likewise, the other issue is the telecommunications - The companies in different countries have to buy in and partner with this new service! I guess, it’s going to be VSNL in India!

Along with the new pay-as-you-go model, Microsoft has also been working with major telecommunication companies around the globe on subscription computing offerings that provide convenient and predictable monthly payments for a full-featured PC with broadband access and genuine software. With the availability of Microsoft FlexGo technology, it will be possible to expand the potential of the subscription model by enabling telecommunications providers to better secure the PC asset from default and offer this option to a broader range of customers.
--GeekZone

Well, I did already put a note that the Subscription based services are also in the mind of Microsoft – Like making payments every month! As I read, here are some countries for the subscription based services - Vietnam, Hungary, Slovenia, India and Brazil.

This is a very new initiative, a new era of working with computers and the right set of countries are selected as targets! But, somehow I'm not sure if people want this exactly! Computers are like something which should be owned or not owned. People may intend to use some service like Internet as pre-paid. But paying for use of computer itself - I'm not sure if people are going to buy this model!

The backing for this pre-paid model is - There is a variation in income for the target families. They need not use the computer if they don't have the money! Well, who would want a Computer - A big machine - to sit in one of the rooms idle for say 5 months! People would buy computers only when they feel it is something essential and they want to use it on a day to day basis - atleast on alternate days! If a computer can be started only if a code is keyed in and if a person can't afford to buy those codes, I guess the person won't even think about buying this computer!

I mean from an Indian middle class perspective, will someone throw like Rs.20,000/- and keep this computer sitting idle? No! But atleast, there may be some chance for subscription service though.

Cricket - A Comic Standing!

I always used to enjoy these comedians' on stage performance like Chris Tucker, Seinfield, Chris Rock... & Really, enjoy watching Russel Peters just because of the way he makes fun of Indians and their cultures.

But always used to wonder if such kind of comic standings happen in India. Well, I don't see such performances aired in any of the Indian TV channels unless they have started lately - Looks like Sony has started doing it. Here is one show where a guy is mimicking cricketers right in front of them! Great Performance!

All credit to my friend Vijay for sending me this link.

Are You 'The' Guy?

Things get screwed up! Any time, any place, any one! But when it comes to millions watching that screw up, like something that got aired by BBC - That is like a worst case scenario! Isn't it?

Alright! Check out! This guy in the left is Guy Kewney - A British Journalist and a PC Pundit. So, he is supposed to be interviewed by BBC to get his views on Apple Vs Apple case. And now check out the interview. So, can you see the screw up? It's a completely different guy who just got interviewed & aired in place of Guy Kewney! What a Mess!

And this replacement is Guy Goma! All he did was walk into BBC office for another interview of a different sort called Job Interview, with a Master's Degree in Congo! How can this kind of screw up happen? Don't the BBC programme producers supposed to know who Mr. Kewney is, how he looks like! I mean, such kind of mistakes can't be accepted! Don't you feel so?

Anyways, a statistic says - This mistake has got so much of attention that this video has got downloaded like more than 1.6 Million times online - Just like the Janet Jackson dress malfunction at the super bowl:)!

On Demand Market!

We can call it the 'Pull System' where the customers drive & the supply meets the demand - Like the case with Dell, which starts assembling the product after a customer places an order - which leads to some advantages like zero inventory & lean system etc. So, this has been the hot topic in all the manufactuing sector for quite sometime now, but there is one market where this hasn't been implemented is Books. I mean, books are always printed in bulk & they are always stocked up in the inventory in all the book stores. Unless, there is a great demand these remaining stocks are going to be an inventory and slowly get back down to a warehouse to collect the dusts! On the other hand, if the old books aren't printed any more, then the customers won't even have a chance to get them back in their hands. Customers are forced to find their alternatives. We need to help the customers, to reduce the extra inventory and to probably avoid using papers!

So thinking about the alternatives -

How about printing books only on demand? Reduce some of those paper inventory! Help customers by making even the out-of-print old books available for printing, well only on demand! I guess, BookSurge is right there!

How about just giving these books as soft copies? And that too for someone mobile. Read the books in the PDA! And here is Mobipocket!

Did you observe what is common between these two sites? It's Jeff Bezos(Picture) & Amazon! Very similar to the book market & BookSurge, they have CustomFlix for the video, tape & DVD (digital) market! Aren't they really some cool business strategies & innovations?

Don't! Not That 'Word'!

This is all about being serious but pretty funny too! It's a daily affair for many humans just to get along with day to day tensions and have a headache. You get rid of that by yourself! And a piece of advice - Just make sure, you don't become a headache for others, if you don't know how to put your headache in words! :)

You would have heard the news! Indian Airlines flight IC 861 bound to Ahmedabad and the high drama it underwent in Delhi airport - All because a lady explained her headache to her co-passenger as 'Bomb in her Mind'! You better be careful before even innocently uttering 'that word' especially in a flight - Just imagine the delay of flights, all the investigations to undergo & what not!

And the coincidence is, this flight carried some high profile people. Quoting Sify.com
"The plane, carrying Gujarat Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma, Textiles Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar..."

The 'Auto' That's Offensive!

Everyone knows what is US Auto industry is upto these days! GM is thinking about Chapter 11, Ford & Chrysler are looking about closing some of its plants in US and ofcourse, Hummer is almost counting its days on the road! Add more fuel to fire with the always surging oil prices! So, with this industry trying to pull together what ever it can to save itself, there is one company that is a bit offensive and is thinking about making some positive changes!

You know who! It's all about Honda! The announcement from them last week that they are planning to open up a new assembly plant in Mid West North America is a sweet surprise for me. 5th of its kind and is a new outlook altogether! So, with a 2005 sales of like 1.6 Million autos, this company is planning to boost it by like 15% more - Is this new plant going to meet those needs? Not exactly! Their previous capacity around this place is like 1.4 Million and all this new plant is going to add is like 200,000 more which by all means meets only the previous year's demand!

So, is this positive outlook good? It's a business world and it's the survival of the fittest! If you got problems, we workaround it and find solutions. That doesn't mean this plant is going to change the whole Auto world around! But, I feel this is going to make it more competitive in the small car segments and a good fight for Toyota Prius. With its continuous successful run last year and this year, the newly modeled Civic 06 will find its spots inside this new plant!

Well! The place is yet to be finalized but as anyone can just make a judgement call, it's going to be around those other suppliers! Anyways, I'm infact more than looking forward to this new face of Honda! A new offensive outlook at the time of 'do or die'!

Another Tolly Remake!

Well! We know that Telugu & Tamil Movie Industries are so inter mingled that when a movie is made in one language it almost gets simultaneously made in the other. Otherwise, they'll wait & remake the biggest hits in one language to the other.

And everyone knows that this guy Vijay is the Remake King in Tamil Movie Industry! Almost every masala - made for the masses - movie of him, is a mega blockbuster! But his last one Aadhi failed miserably in the box office. So, my expectation is atleast at this point of time in his career that he'll get back to making some originals & get away from remakes. Well, looks like he is not going to disappoint his great fan following! Well, the rumour around is, he is going back to masala movies from Telugu :)

So, I happened to watch one of the latest telugu hits Pokiri with some of my friends in a theatre. Telugu movies haven't changed much and even today, its all about action, songs, masala, emotions, more actions & sentiments! Mahesh Babu, is Telugu's Vijay is my guess :)!

Anyways, rumours are around! Vijay is remaking Mahesh Babu's Pokiri in Tamil! Any guesses on the director - Prabhu Deva!

So, you think this is a different topic altogether from all my previous posts! I would say, this is something more to do with 'popular demand'!

What a Bore! What a Thriller!

I know if I write about the Indian batting performance against West Indies I should also write about the thrilling win for West Indies. But, what to do? I never felt like watching a one day game - It was more like a Test Game! If you happened to watch today's game, then you would have also felt the same.

Coming to the point! West Indies score of 198 in 50 overs in the limited over Cricket match in Kingston, Jamaica - What a poor score! So, everyone expected a pretty much easy walk through for India having the comfortable of winning like past 17 games in chasing & that too with a big batting line up! So, in comes the Indian team for batting! From the very first ball, we just can feel what the whole Indian team is feeling! "Just take it easy and we'll win this game!"

I waited! We All waited! Every ball, just rolling over and no & low scoring game! Didn't you all get bored watching the game? Like first 50 in 77 balls & then comes like 2nd fifty in 100 balls! Bad & Bad! Won't the players feel the crowd's excitement to watch the game? The whole world is looking at this game that too on a weekend & so, I guess the players have the responsibility of making the game more entertaining & exciting! Well, the game didn't live up to the entertainment expectation but it just turned out to be more exciting at the end!

What a thriller! Not worth a single run defeat! I could have lived with atleast a tie with a single run by Yuvi & Munaf Patel getting out! But, its worth a fight by the West Indians! All Hands To The Game of Cricket!

Thank You & You Too!

If you think, you know the weakness of a stronger person and hence, ready to fight him out, you better know your weakness because the stronger person may just be knowing your weakness already!

This is funny! The 2 products we are talking about is iPod - The leader in MP3 player market, from Apple and Zen - May be the second leader:), from Creative Labs! Basically, iPod has like around 75% market share in US and Zen has like 10%! So, Creative Labs wants to take some profit which it thinks it rightfully owns, out of Apple! Like any other weaker company, not able to fight the leader in the market Creative Labs wants to take the legal, rather the patent route!

Before going to the court, Creative Labs tried to do all possible discussions with Apple on iPod's patent infringements on that of Zen's. Nothing worked out and hence, it just filed the issue on May 15th (accompanied with another trade complaint to stop the import of iPod from China)! What it didn't anticipate is, Apple filed another lawsuit on the same day on some patent infringements by Zen of iPod's! Woooo! This is like saying 'Yeah! I was just waiting for you to file so that I can file too, well on the very same day'

US Patent Lawsuits are sure heating up the whole business environment around!

GC - The Word in Town!

One Major Issue that is being faced by every other Indian (below 2 Million heads) in US is GC! Looks like the Green Card Fever is reaching its heights!

If you haven't heard about Immigration Voices, then I guess most probably you'll run into it very soon in some news. They are really trying to make some statements because of all the frustrations they have taken all these days. Here are some day to day issues for any Indian awaiting GC -
Can't change address? Can't change job? No Promotions? Do I need to be married? Do I need to renew my Visa? How safe am I If i buy a house? Can't my wife work? Can't she get her Social Security? What No Driving License too?

Meanwhile, the backlog elimination centers came into picture sometime back & people who were almost standing first in queue to get their GC went way back like 2-3 years behind. Well my guess is, the center actually increased the backlog:)! Then, people who waited already for 3 years went back again in December 2005 when the US congress declined an immigration amendment!

With all these frustrations, Aman Kapoor took charge! He obviously used the online/internet Indian community and called for help & assistance! Now, he has the backing of like 3000 members, still growing including Chinese who are in the same grounds! The org also partnered itself with high powered lobbying firm Quinn Gillespie & Associates LLC! So, are they trying to achieve something fruitful:
- The first thing is to reduce the wait time from like 6 years to atleast likely 3 years which in turn, needs some optimization in the backlog reduction
- If the above has to be done, atleast the Green Card quota got to be increased which is now like 140,000. So, the expectation is to hike that to like 300,000

A note worthy effort! Wishfully, the Immigration Voices will be appropriately heard!

Sending in, A Grave Error? Isn't Taking Out...

If a set of countries have taken the initiative on a common ground, then I guess it's a commitment made till the end. Things won't just change because the leadership changed. At the same time, they just can't leave things in the middle when it is yet to be settled.

It may be acceptable that Romano Prodi, the new Italian Prime Minister remarked on Iraq war as a 'Grave Mistake'. Okay! I guess most of the countries do have the same problem. Tony Blair has enough pressure in his country! Likewise, Bush's opponent John Kerry's last election campaign was basically against Bush's war on Iraq! It's still an ongoing argument on where the intelligence failed in not finding the reality of 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' in Iraq! All accepted! But the countries should stand and do stand for their commitment to restore peace in Iraq and that should be appreciated.

But, somehow I'm not comfortable in Prodi's latest stand of removing the 3000 troops from Iraq when the tensions are still unsettled and when the power is still not handed over to Iraqis! Once again a stand, to have peace in Iraq and to hand over the power to the locals is a commitment made by the country, not just by their Ex-Leader like Silvio Berlusconi! Don't you agree?

No 'Intel Inside' Dell!

When its time for Intel to make its move inside Mac, I guess why not AMD make its move into the highest PC maker - I mean Dell!

It's a long awaited decision! Dell has been testing it's servers with AMD chips and atlast, after a very bad quarter it made an announcement today that their servers are moving towards Opteron chips from AMD - The biggest rival of Intel who lately, has been grabbing server chips market share from Intel! One more place where we'll miss 'Intel Inside'!

AMD wanted this much needed break, to have a bigger & better bite of Intel's markets! Now, all AMD got to do is, try to get into Dell's desktops & notebooks! Can they make it? Sure they can because the market is looking forward to such a move! The market just proved today - Their reactions by increasing the share price for Dell & AMD while some more decline for Intel!

This is time for Advanced Micro Devices to be inside rather than Intel!

G(ood)olden Days of India

I'm not sure how far these photos are true! Do they really represent the good old golden days of India? Or are they some photoshop work?

Well, Whatever it is! I ran into a set of photos termed as those representing India in Those Days like in 19th & 20th centuries. Here is a photo of Mumbai VT Station as it stood in 1894! Is it so? Check out more photos here!

Doesn't it look like the colored ones are done in some Studio with some wallpaper as the background!?:)

Is this How...

IT Consultancy Businesses Are Running?! :)

The story of the giant ship engine that failed - The ship's owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure out how to fix the engine. Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster. He carried a large bag of tools with him and when he arrived he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom.

Two of the ship's owners were there watching this man, hoping he would know what to do. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag and pulled out a small hammer. He gently tapped something. Instantly, the engine lurched into life. He carefully put his hammer away.
The engine was fixed! A week later, the owners received a bill from the old man for ten thousand dollars.

"What?!" the owners exclaimed. "He hardly did anything!"
So they wrote the old man a note saying, "Please send us an itemized bill."

The man sent a bill that read:
Tapping with a hammer ........................... $ 2.00
Knowing where to tap ............................ $ 9998.00

Guess, the IT Consultancy Firms do the same thing! Implement simple solutions but milk their clients!

'Originals' From Strangers!

Imagine this situation - Narayan Venkitu, a chennaiite in US writes a song of his own Vaazhvu Chizhikka. He sends the same to Joseph Thomas in Thrissur, Kerala who eventually ends up singing the same. The song goes to an IIT Chennai Student, Ajit Gopalakrishnan for Orchestration! (--Referring New Indian Express)

That is the start with 3 people! Now, it's a group of around 50! These people have come together from different parts of the world just for one reason - Music. All they want to do, is compose songs from start to end - Lyrics, Music, Sing, Orchetrate & Release for live streaming & downloads - The Originals!

The best part is, they are still strangers to each other living miles apart and still linked together by their Blogs! Now, they have a special collaborative audio-blog of their own - BlogSwara. Looks like this has been getting quite a bit of attention, otherwise, I wouldn't have come to know about this!:)

Boys, on the making!

'Bric'k Strategy!

As I was sitting in a business meeting, I hear this question raised on BRICK strategy! Well, that's what I thought as the spelling to be when I heard it! So, my brains was working on the explanation as - How a business is built & how it survives from the bottom level to the top most! What else can you think if its a Brick strategy! Well, I guess I have been unaware of this famous term for this long (What a waste!)

The answer is most of the big IT companies in North America are concentrating on this BRIC! It is the focus on the growing market segments of Brazil, Russia, India & China! Wow! Isn't that too much of information to compress in four letters? And then came a quick review of the growth in these countries & what companies look as future in these countries!

Let's just look at the GDP Forecast for 2006 - China is like at 9% and India is at 8% while US is like at 3% and EU is at 2%! What else, the cheap labour as everyone knows - India is looking into around 50% of the population in the matured teen (15 to 19) and above teen (20 to 25). When 30% of the population in BRIC countries are below 15, only 15% falls in the same category from the matured countries. So be it? But these segments we are talking about are IT workers, they are not newer markets for IT investments! Isn't that the current perception!?

But, the fact is there are quite a bit of upcoming markets in these countires to which IT is looking forward to cater. Russia is still counting on its rich natural gas & crude oil resources while Brazil on its iron ores - They still have enough to bring all kind of IT investments! China on the other hand is still the labour market producing & exporting products to all the developed countries and even new technologies to other countries! While what is the status of India? India is standing 3rd I guess, in 'the highest number of new businesses started' in 2005! Ofcourse, something huge coming up to cater to!

Check out the estimated IT gains for BRIC countries - From like $50 Billion in 2005 to like $115 Billion in 2009! I guess, this pretty much sums up BRIC strategy - The Ongoing Major IT Investments!
But, when it comes to India, who'll stop from talking about corruption!

Caveats that could hold the emerging markets back include inflation, insolvency, inefficiency, insurrection, inept administration, corruption and lack of infrastructure, he says.

An Inch Closer to YouTube!

It's time for some Video update! Well, not from me, but from Google Videos!

I prefer going over Google Video if I'm really in search of a Video. Like any other service from Google, it is still in Beta stage and hasn't really occupied a place above Google's Home Page Text Box:)

"The service is kind of ok when search & play is considered. But have you tried uploading? That is not great at all when compared to other video sites" - That would have been my comment till yesterday considering these - Just like any other photo uploading websites like Yahoo Photos or ImageStation , which asks the user to install a software for easy drag & drop upload of multiple photos, Google was asking user to install a software to upload a video. I hated that! Even, to some extent that is acceptable! But the whole enthusiasm to share the video with others & see the video online, will eventually drain off I guess, when we finally see the video itself! My goodness, it takes like a day for the video to show up in the website! Looks like Google has heard enough complaints like these!

They just made life easier! Check it out for yourself! No Software! Added to that:

Users occasionally have had to wait as long as 24 hours for a video to show up on the service, said Peter Chane, a product manager for Google Video. Videos should now be available to share shortly after they are transmitted to Google, Chane said.
-- Yahoo News
. This is a good move. But, its not an easy fight for leadership in this video category! Because, even Google knows that every day the number of unique visitors to social networking sites Myspace & especially YouTube are always on the rise!

Well, for me, I'm just going to upload some videos of my recent stage performances into Google! Will eventually provide the links out here, I guess:)

And The 'Neta Controversy' Continues:)

I had a thought that this controversy is over by now! Well, any normal person won't think about this on a day to day basis and would have the same opinion as mine. Not really! Especially if your project is to find out the real truth behind it!

I'm not sure about the real facts. But let me put what I have learnt! It seems, the first commission was run by Shah Nawaz Khan, who served Indian National Army (INA) and the second one is under Justice G.D. Khosla. Okay, so? Well, there came this third commission under Justice M.K. Mukherjee which was setup on May 14, 1999 under the Commissions of Inquiry Act!! Why, for what? All these commissions were set up for a one reason - To investigate and find the real truth behind the disappearance and alleged death of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, the commander of INA and the great Indian freedom fighter who lead the fight from Japan & Burma against the British rule. Now, don't you agree that we have better things to do than to fight over this controversy? If you differ, so be it!

This new commission was set up by BJP and it had been working for the past 6 years, going around Russia, Japan & Taiwan! What the heck? I accept that we need to give respects to those great leaders and we need to set out history right! But, that doesn't mean we just keep on wasting our resources, energy, time & money on something which will lead us no where! I guess, these theories & the controversies are going to live forever, till the day we have Indian Politicians who are not going to think about Indian people and their welfare!

So, did Netaji truly leave Bangkok and die in an air crash in Taipei on Aug 18, 1945? Or was he taken to Siberia and killed in front of the then Soviet Leader Joseph V. Stalin? Well, no one knows and this new Mukherjee commission stands against all those allegations! And the Congress government is not ready to accept this conclusion either?!

Well atleast they all accept on one point! Netaji is most probably not alive now because he'll be 108 years!!

Unknown Face In Top 100!

When I happened to sit in a hospital lobby for few minutes, I had enough time to browse through some of the magazines around. One of the recent editions available was the special issue from Time - Top 100 people who are changing our world & our lives around us!

So, it had all the regular names - From Bush to Angelina Jolie, The Sudoku game Champion (who gave a new life to the game in US), Nandan Nilakeni and so on! Then comes this new name, an unknown face, Vikram Akula representing SKS MicroFinance and the article talks about how he has been helping below poverty line Indian women living in villages, from 1998! So, its quite obvious - My curiosity increased to learn more about this SKS and how this businessman is in this year Time's Top 100!

Well, the numbers speak for themselves I guess! 221,000 Woman clients and $52 Million in loan! Loan amounts in the measures of around $100 (Rs.5000) for people who make around $2(Rs.100) a day! That sure is a big number to be the loan amount just for below poverty line families! Very Small Initiatives going long way as a top business and also deep into the lives of such poor families!

Some details - Women from a village are formd into sub-groups of five. Many such groups join together to form the main group (Sangam as termed by SKS) for a village! So, the women in the subgroup help each other and become responsible for repaying the loan if someone in the group defects! Likewise, the whole Sangam becomes responsible if a sub group fails to repay a loan.

Though we are just talking about poor & below poverty line families, this system is way advanced technology-wise. People have databases and they are using MIS to track the amounts, payments & loans. The villagers themselves are tracking the loan repayments using computers (with 100s of inbuilt local languages)! If this itself is surprising, there is more to it! Smart Cards just like Credit Cards are used to track loans & refunds of Rs5000 (around $100)! Wow - Technology like Smart Cards is reaching the interiors of India! This cashless system has lead to smooth flow of loaning & repayments that Visa has given the recognition for this system. That itself should have given a great boost for this whole MicroFinance business.

If you get a chance, visit SKS! You'll sure understand how people are benefiting, if you just read those moving client stories!

An 'Ajax' Makeup!

Its been 2 years I guess, since the first time I saw the old face of Yahoo! It desperately needed some change and today is the day - It atlast showed some... hmm, rather many differences!

The prominent features - The more importance given for the search text box! The page is kind of clean, light, & bright - More Cool! And I guess they have really considered people's preferences for bigger screen sizes - The page is more filling for a 17 inch screen!

Well, for the more personalized pages! The new make up kit Ajax has done the magic - made its way all the way from the Beta Maps pages to the Home Page - The easy review of weather, mails, local traffic, friends online just on a single click... oops, no clicks - Just hover over! Equally well done is the enlarged texts in the left side of those user's preferred features - grabs attention!

Is this changeover needed? Guess so! Just to compete with Google, MSN, AOL & all the social networking sites like MySpace! Here goes some stats for April 06 (Unique US vistors):

Yahoo - 105.4 million
MSN - 92.8 million
Google - 92.1 Million
AOL - 70.4 million
MySpace - 38.4 million

Ajax "makeup" - A long way to go!

'Techincal' Foul! - A Beginning?

It's a well known fact that China has been really trying hard in recent years to come up to the speed of the western countries, in what, Technology. Chinese government has been lately funding lots of University & Industry Research Works and has intensified the pressure under the two worded campaign - Innovation Society. It seems, people are paid by the number of papers they release and by the inventions they come up with! Is this true? Anyways, have these efforts paid off well?

When the news came out that the one of the youngest & the most reputed Professor Chen Jin, dean of the microelectronics school at the prestigious Shanghai Jiaotong University is fired, its a rejoice time for companies like Texas Instruments- not just companies but sort of, for many Developed countries. This professor has faked his work - Claiming some other company's research as his own and that his DSP chips are capable of some incapable functionalities! Alright! All these can be accepted as any day to day story, but why is this making hot news?

Well! Prof. Jin's research is itself seen as an example of how China is capable of developing its own technology, equivalent to those of the western countries - Making China not to rely on other countries' imports. So, those claims went down the hill with the firing of the professor. At the same time, analysts are predicting that many of the research works in China fall under the same category. Many more 'fradulent' researchers will come to the light soon after this, is the expectation!

But, how are they going to be identified? Shouldn't the new technology based research & development works done in China be analyzed & verified by the international community? Yes, but the problem is the language - Mainly not affluent in English! So, unless it is made mandatory that their works meet international standards, they can't be verified! I guess, the responsibility once again falls on the Chinese government! They should make sure that the legitimate research works are duely acknowldeged by appropriate verifications!

At the same time, it's the researchers' responsibility to do an honest research! Let's just hope the Chinese government's funding will be properly used by the researchers not only to come up with the best inventions but to help the World's technology community as a whole!

Prof.Jin - Wishfully, He is not the beginning!

Lava Dance :)

"Oh Lord! Oh Soul of the Departed King! Please, be kind enough to save the life of Maridjan"

I have no idea how to put this in words! Should I call this craziness or Should I appreciate their commitments to their responsibilities? I would rather stick to the former, I guess!

Everyone knows Mount Merapi has been spitting smokes, dust, hot ash, debris falling far enough like four kilometers for past few weeks and everyone is awaiting its explosion. Everyone? I doubt! Except some of the villagers who stay around the mount I guess. These people have been making more news than the actual Mount & its awaiting volcano itself. I really was stopping myself from writing on this but for this news today.

People have been going back to their houses to take care of their work & their responsibilities around the Mount - By just risking their lives. Do these people know what they are upto? Without life, they got no responsibilities! Adding more to that

...locals are preparing food offerings and performing ceremonies...in a bid to appease the volcano's spirits.
-- NationalGeographic.com
They are performing Javanese dances??!!

Ok! If you are ready to accept these, then I guess you should pity the plight of Maridjan - Key Holder of Mount Merapi! It is understandable that at 80 years he is a diehard in his beliefs, but it has reached such heights that this person is waiting for the departed king's soul to give him some "sign"!

Knowlingly, should we allow these people to welcome their death? Its better if Indonesian government spring into action and immediately, help these people's evacuations.

Trolls' Cases Rolls On!

I have already written about Patent Trolls and how they are exploiting the loopholes in US Patent Laws. Well, it just took a new turn today.

We all knew that eBay already lost the Buy It Now patent suit to MercExchange and has already paid around USD 25Mil. United States Court of Appeals (a specialized court to handle just patent suits) had also already ruled earlier this year that as a general rule, if a patent suit is finalized in favor of one party, the losing side should stop using the patented material. Fair Enough! Not really!

The Supreme Court today came up with a decision of its own. The case Winner should answer four questions before the injunction takes place for the Loser-
- Has the Winner suffered an irrepairable loss/injury?
- Is there no way out?
- Is the injunction warranted, considering the harm for both parties?
- How far the public interest is harmed?

The respective case judges should analyze the answers to these questions to provide a judgement on injunction! I feel, that is for sure a well thought out judgement!

So, coming back to the cases which I had mentioned in my previous post - If at all they are brought back to court, 'Patent Trolls' have to come up with answers! I guess, the first question (as per the judgement) itself has written an answer called 'WIN' for eBay against MercExchange! (& for RIM against NTP which is a done deal. So no more court case!) Doesn't it? With no business around, where can MercExchange look for an irrepairable loss?

With this judgement, the patent suits by Trolls are likely looking for Win-Lose/Win situation for both parties. The cases will answer two questions here after:
Is it a patent infringement?
- (May Be) YES - Trolls get millions.
Should the case continue for an injunction?
- (May be) NO! - Loser continues using the Patent

Home Hero - Start to End!

If at all there was a strategy for Schumi & Ferrari to come ahead of Alonso & Renault today at the Spanish Grand Prix, then I guess, they failed to execute. Rather, lets put it like this. Alonso never gave a chance for the Ferraris to even think about winning the F1. It's a champion's race and a champion, wanting to prove in front of his home crowd of 131000.

Schumi did execute his strategy of winning over positions at pit stops. Especially when he took the lead over Fisichella, after the former's 1st pit stop. That is something good. Renault was relying on Fisichella for the pressure on Schumi and they failed there, because Fisichella lost like 6 secs by going off the track. So, pressure from Fisichella(Renault) over Schumi(Ferrari) weakened and Schumi could easily think about going ahead of Alonso. But, Schumi never had a chance to put atleast some pressure on Alonso the whole 66 laps - Trailing by 10 seconds after first 6 laps & continuously trailing by .4 Seconds every lap. And at the end losing by 20 secs.

A Race where engine power & the speed of Renault spoke & ofcourse, the hands-legs of Alonso danced (His celebrations) - Back on track after trailing in the 2nd place behind Schumi for the last 2 races!

A "Fort" Breach in Chennai!

DMK has won the election in Tamil Nadu in India and Karunanidhi is ready to take over as the next Chief Minister. Old News! But an interesting observation is how come, out of 14 constituencies in Chennai which has always been a DMK strong hold, it could only retain six while Amma's AIADMK gained like seven constituencies?

Lately, in any election you think of, till the last vote is counted results can go one way or the other. Well, we know of US stand off (Bush Vs Gore/Kerry). We had been closely watching Italy's elections (Prodi & Berlusconi). In TamilNadu alone, things won't work like that, well, until this time. This election was a close watch. MK Stalin, the next serious contender for Chief Ministerial post if his father (Karunanidhi) fails/declines, won by a meager margin of 2400 votes. Well, if you think that is a small number, just consider this. Anbazhagan just narrowly escaped from a defeat - 409 votes!! Did DMK take Chennai for granted?

So, what changes did Jayalalitha bring during her tenure to gain popularity among the Chennaiites? Is it because of her drinking water scheme? Or is it because of her money distribution scheme for whoever got/didn't get affected because of the monsoons?

Whatever it is, two things have to be appreciated in this election. I feel there is 100% truth in the following statement made by Karunanidhi.

The DPA had withstood a "money wave" unleashed by AIADMK, and had swum across it due to dedicated work.
--MidDay
DMK did dare to fight against AIADMK's money! The second thing is, how VijayKanth confidently stood candidates in all 234 constituencies. He not only did that, but his popularity made sure his candidates get like more than 8000 votes in all the constituencies. Guess, he sure split the votes and that sure is one of the main reasons for the defeat of Amma.

Judgement is over! Its the time for bringing more developments into Tamil Nadu. I just hope & wish, with more funding to come from the central government (which was always stopped by the AIADMK) for this new state government that the people of TamilNadu should gain good benefits unless corruption plays its hands.

The 'Yes' Class!

If there is one thing which you may consider, for not buying this car then it is the price. Well, if you want those much of comforts, look & power you got to pay!:)

(Photo from BusinessWeek.com)

Just by seeing this (Check it Out), I want to feel it! Drive it! Sit on each seat & sense the comforts! Wow! That is Mercedez Benz S550 Luxury Sedan - A little More than a car!

As the price stands for the car is like from 86 to nearly 120 grand, USD! Well, that is right and the S600 is looking for the 140 mark! So, you wanna buy? :):p

Postal Service - A Different Cause

Is there a time when you get to see your postman carry your food items? Well! Be in US to see such kind of things happen. I'm not ridiculing because this is something note worthy!

Like, today I was walking around my mail boxes. There are lots of plastics bags kept on top of the mail boxes with lots of food items inside them. And a big note read USPS Food Drive - May 13th! Wow! Are the United States postal workers facing hunger problem? What does this Food Drive mean? A small search gives the answer!

Something remarkable the postal workers are doing! Creating a change in the society! They collect food from different cities and serve the hunger striken children in & around the city! The statistics on this stands even BIGGER! It seems every year for the past 13 years they have been doing this kind of food drive! The cumulative pounds (in weight) of food they have collected for 13 years has crossed half a billion including the last year's of around 75 million pounds. That's awesome!

USPS, I mean the postal service of United States, which reaches nook & corner of the country is sure a huge organization. When all the workers of this organization, work as a team to help the community with the respecive local community's help, it sure will make a welcome DIFFERENCE! Won't it?

Game of 'Lagaan' - For Baseball Crowd?!

At one end, we have all the complaints from the players that their schedules are straining! They are getting burnt out with the continuous set of games! So! Who cares? Who are supposed to care? Nobody cares! All these happens in & around the game of Cricket.

Lets see! Sehwag the Indian vice captain did make a comment on the hectic schedule the players are undertaking! Well, at the other end BCCI & ICC reveal the complete future schedule for Indian Cricket team. Well, added to that they also confirmed some new games besides the regular schedule and in some new venues!

I too pity on the players. They shouldn't have been lead to an extent when they start complaining. But, the games and the new venues - They sure are a great initiative for the game as a whole. There is this whole continent called America which has been unaware of this game for quite a long time and even today many people don't understand the game. This is like for any Indian who tries to understand American Football for the first time. Americans have the seasonal games like College Football & NFL for Fall, College BasketBall & NBA for Winter & Spring, Baseball, Nascar, Ice Hockey & quite a few of the games which keep them preoccupied. So, where is the time to learn Cricket? There is no TV channel in US which shows cricket. There is no news channel which discusses about the game. So, who thinks about it?

But, there is quite a great crowd of Indians in US. We know how they have been changing the world at present times. We also know Indians are attracted by 2 things - Movies & Cricket. Movies, I mean Tollywood, Bollywood & Kollywood have already been on the roll for the US Indian community. People are producing movies just for the foreign Indian crowd. Movie stars are always on the fly to different countries doing stage performances and so, the movie industry is doing all it can to satify the international Indian crowd. But, what about Cricket? Especially to the US Indian crowd. So, playing cricket in front of US cricket-loving crowd by the international teams is a boon for the watchers.

As it stands now, there will be a game between West Indies and India after the Indian's scheduled tour to West Indies, on US soil by the end of '06. The pitch selected is Fort Lauderdale, Florida - The American Venice. Those are the good news. The bad news is - The stadium is still under construction. The assumption is - There won't be any hurricanes at that time around!:)

Lets keep our fingers crossed! Hopefully, the Americans will get the first feel of Live Cricket with Indians! Wishfully, the American Desis get to see their favorite game with their favorite team live in action!

Steels - Steal or Deal?

This head on collision between the largest & the 2nd largest steel makers has been in news for like what, 4-5 months? So much of hype & too many things happening around this! And I guess, I'm hazy on one point - How does a hostile takeover bid work and who'll win at the end? I mean, isn't this something basic - If the owners, Arcelor - Board of Directors & Shareholders don't want to sell it, how can someone else, Lakshmi Mittal of Mittal Industries acquire?

Well, in this story there are quite a bit of characters involved – Mittal, Arcelor, Dofasco, ThyssenKrupp, European Countries, India, European Commission, US Regulators, Netherlands based Trust firm & Lawyers. I guess, I'll be able to relate all of them here!

This plot started when Arcelor bought over Canada's Dofasco to gain some market in US's Auto-Steel. At this juncture like around end of January 06, Mittal made the offer to buy over Arcelor itself (which will make Mittal 3 times larger than its next steel competitor!). So, my thought was that Mittal wants to use Dofasco. But, as part of the buying deal, Mittal also announced that it'll hand over Dofasco to ThyssenKrupp (Germany's largest Steel Maker!). So, what is the advantage of buying Arcelor for Mittal? To become a sole leader - monopoly?

What did I say, monopoly? That’s it! You know how the reaction is going to be. As expected, Governments & politicians broke loose. The European ministers & politicians took a cold outlook to his bid. Well, if one third party makes noise, then we sure can see many more parties trying to involve themselves into and try to benefit out of it. Once it turned out that the Europeans are not backing the deal, someone from outside needs to back Mittal! Who else is better than our best known Indian politicians? So, they termed Europe’s perspective towards the bid as racial, with Lakshmi Mittal being an Indian. All we need to do is give Indian politicians some chance and they can pull out any logical reasoning out of air! But, sure they added enough spice to this deal - Considering how Indians will survive in the future in this International Business World; If an Indian needs help, they are not going to sit & watch; They’ll back him/her with the best they got!

Arcelor is trying to make the deal look a bit tough and is taking all defensive measures. One of its main concern is that Mittal is not correctly valuing Arcelor! It never appreciated the offer of 22.4Billion Euro. And now, it takes another route in its defense strategy by buying back more of its shares like for around 8Billion Euros.

BTW, this is just not involving only two parties. It’s a huge-old industry & we are talking about the leaders trying to become as dictators for the world. So, enters the European Commission & US Regulators, who needs to give the nod for this deal to continue. I guess, both of them are ready to approve the bid under one constraint – Dofasco shouldn’t be part of Mittal after the takeover. I guess US has already approved it with the same constraint!

“The US Department of Justice today appeared to give Mittal some leverage over such a poison pill-style defense, saying: "If Mittal acquires Arcelor but is unable to divest Dofasco, the agreement requires Mittal to divest certain alternative assets to a buyer acceptable to the department."
- TimesOnLine.
And the EU is taking its time till the first week of June 06.

Arcelor has to make sure the bid doesn't work out! So, when trying to take care of themselves, they also made sure Dofasco becomes a far reach for Mittal. So, it ends up handing over Dofasco to some Netherlands based Trust firm (Not sure of the exact details!).

Meanwhile, Mittal is also doing all the backend works getting help from all possible corners! They are making sure no stone is left unturned. With the help of lawyers, they are trying out the legal ways to get hold of Dofasco from Arcelor if at all the bid didn't go as expected. Is there a way for this? I mean the owners don't want to give up one of their subsidiary but Mittal want to take it from them legally!?

Adding to all these, there is this patent lawsuit going on in US where Arcelor has sued Mittal.
The Arcelor patent covers its Usibor technology, which uses boron, a soft nonmetallic element that strengthens steel in cars to help them survive crashes. Arcelor says Chicago-based Mittal Steel USA is violating the patent by selling aluminum-coated boron steel that is highly resistant to corrosion.

I’m not sure if this has some implications on the take over bid or if this is just another US Patent Lawsuit!

Put on with so many plots, my first question still stands! How does a hostile takeover bid work? Who approves this?

Much of the article's credit goes to Bloomberg.com! I'm just here @ a corner of the world reading different news articles, trying to understand where the "steal" deal is going & putting my views ahead! Sure, why not! Consider this as a disclaimer :) Also, I would greatly appreciate your comments if you feel there are more to this or if I’m wrong somewhere!

Houston! Did You Just OutSource?

Well, well, well! US outsourcing to India is reaching new heights! The height is no where within earth's atmosphere, if you think of it literally :).

As a matter of fact, NASA just did that. We are not talking about more call centers or computer specific. The job is to deliver US technical instruments to moon. India's Chandrayaan-1, the unmanned moon mission planned for early 2008 will be taking two of US's moon research instruments to outer space. Well, for more specifics on the instruments, check out Financial Times. At the same time, I can't stop from mentioning how that article is very apt for 'Financial Times' (with the required finance ingredients) - How a developing country like India with 260Million population below poverty line is spending like 89Million US dollars for such space missions and how Prime Minister Dr.Singh reacts to such queries!

It is not just US. Besides 11 Indian, Chandrayaan-1 will carry like 3 more instruments from European Space Agency & one from Bulgaria! Go India! Looks like the Whole World is behind you to take ourselves closer to Moon!

For current terms, this is great from Indian Perspective compared to that of China's moon missions in 2007 & 2012. But in future terms, is India planning to launch a Manned Mission anytime soon? (Especially after realizing/considering that there is no space for an Indian Astronaut in US Space Shuttle for next four years as reported by NASA a day before!)

Deal Show Math, Any Idea?

Does anyone have the solution before the banker or Howie calls the number? If that is the case, I would love to have the math behind it.

Hmmm. You sure know what I'm talking about if you are kind of enjoying the show - Deal or No Deal. I know this comes in CNBC, but not sure about the timing. Just another show to give away a million dollar!

This show is more to do with the luck of the person who is playing. Well, I don't care how it is played. But, I'm really interested in knowing how the "Banker" is coming up the numbers. It's all pure math behind - More to do with probability (& probably, some Stats!). I really would like to know what weightage & factors are considered in this math. I tried crunching some numbers but didn't go till the end. Just want to take some effortless route!

Do you have it? Or, is it there somewhere online? Let me know!

Hands & Hearts!

I guess, most people do have this habit of reading License Plates of near by vehicles when they drive around. Well, I'm no different and ofcourse, I also try to make different set of meanings with those numbers & letters. Like for instance, yesterday I saw this plate with all alphabets. If a plate has only alphabets, then for sure it has some backing. The text is 'KYKALOT'. So, any guess? The words are formed just like the chat slangs mostly avoiding the vowels. KYK has to be de-cripted - Kayak. Likewise, there are a lot like these and people come with creative words:
SOWHITE - Behind a Pure White Beemer
AIKEA06 - Represents IKEA (I Guess) because this vehicle was going near an IKEA store.

But there are also some license plates with symbols. The symbols are of {Heart}, {Hand}, {Star} etc. These are really cool. I mean, they really represent something and it's interesting to see people come up with words with them. Like
{Hand}SFULL
Trojan{Star} - Trojan is the FootBall team name from USC
{Heart}LY - Lovely
UR{Hand}SUM - You Are HandSome!

The campaign behind these personalized plates is Have A Heart, Be A Star, Help Our KIDS.

The fees collected from the Kids License Plates are deposited in the Child Health and Safety Fund and used for programs that will help keep California kids safe through injury prevention efforts.
- CA DMV. It sure has the backing of some good motive. You know what I always used to wonder about these plates - if at all a cop wants to write a ticket, how will (s)he represent these symbols in his(er) writings?!:)

Well, on a funny note, I have one of the weirdest numbers which comes up with different meanings when we think crooked! Here is the number 9E56X4B in a jumbled order:)! Give it a try & tell me what my license plate number is?

So, have you lately observed any such interesting plates? Well, pass it on then!
