WMP - A New Definition!

If you still think WMP stands for Windows Media Player, may be its because you just didn't realize that Microsoft has come up with a new definition! Not much of change though because the new word is Photo instead of Player - Windows Media Photo. This is currently up & running with the Windows Vista Beta version.

So, what is different & what's the advantage? They just want to switch over from the old JPEG format to this new WMP format without losing the value of the photo itself. My understanding is, this is going to compress the digital pictures 1:25 around twice more than that of JPEG, and hence taking less space. Microsoft ofcourse has defined the specs too. Any idea, what this 'continuous tone' means?

Is this going to revolutionize the image compression market? I feel its just another 3 letter alphabet that gets added to the never ending list of so called Image Formats - JPG, JPEG, GIF, TIF, TIFF, BMP, PNG, WMF, EMF, PICT, PSD, SVG (uffff...) Is that it? I'm sure, I have missed some more:)
