A Known Fact!

There are some things different about the humans in US and that we can blatantly see, when we come here for the first time especially from a country like India! Hmm.. Am just finding words to put it! Alright, here is a list (May be add the word 'Almost' to all of them) -

  • Every person you meet on the road will greet you with Hi, Hello, Wasssup, How are you doing or just Good Morning!
  • We can expect every shop clerk to say 'Thank You' and wish us 'A Good Day/Evening'!
  • If someone walks through a door and if you are following them, the other person will keep the door open for you until you pass by!
  • When you sneeze in a crowd, you can expect someone to shout 'Bless You'!
  • Car drivers wait for pedestrians and for other cars as if they are not in any hurry! They even show hand signs for others to take the lead!
We just can't expect any of them in India! No way, especially to strangers! Does that mean Indians are impolite? Not courteous? Well, that's what a Reader's Digest survey between February & March 06 has found! "New York - Most Polite! Mumbai - Rudest"! Guess, they have added one more criteria to the above list of simple things - Drop a document and see if any passby picks it up!

As I have always insisted, common Indians have great hearts! It'll be put into work, only when need arises! With the population in each & every metro & cosmo city in India exploding, may be the percentage of such small things happening is very small that they become unnoticed! Don't you feel so?

I agree that population is the main cause. If you stop your car for letting the peds go in India then you may have to shut the engine of your car go have your lunch and then go. Politeness should be measured by a host's hospitality, on how people react when someone seeks someone's help.

speaking of peds...
people here are in a hurry they love to drive against the traffic...and jump signals....
this had bad outcomes on me...a reckless taxi driver broke my leg while he was "cuatiosly" jumping the signal..!!
the justufication...
"Main toh signal tod raha tha...pata nahi ye kaha se aa gaya..!!"
so the cop replies...
"Agli Baar Se Samhaal ke Todna..!!"
u do understand hindi naa jagan..??
Stay Connected. (u dont need to know hindi to do so..)

ya, that accident was really bad. i still remember how tensed ur parents were. i had called at ur place when u were hospitalised, ur mom almost broke down during the conversation. man! that taxi driver didn't even get the punishment he deserved! well, thats India. and one thing more. as u know merit doesn't mean anything in India. take another incident. Bengali MPs are approaching BCCI to take Ganguly back in the team. i dunno watever happened to talent. now only thing which is meaningful is caste.

I work at the International Tech Park in Bangalore. There are a few roads inside campus itself. There is a lot less traffic inside, there is a 20 Kmph speed limit and numerous speed breakers.

Even then I have to be very attentive, agile and quick to save myself from being hit by a speeding car when crossing the road using the pedestrian crossing or in the basement parking!!!

Now were are not taking about the less educated taxi drivers here, these are well educated engineers working in the IT industry and probably have seen the western world.

What I do not understand is what they would do with the few seconds that they gained in these roads while they wasted hours in the bad traffic outside the campus.

Anyway check out my rant on Bangalore traffic (The Human Touch: http://www.vasanth.in/2006/03/13/BangaloreTrafficTheHumanTouch.aspx)

i'll tell u one thing. the taxi drivers here have a different style of welcoming visitors. news articles on these things keep coming. taxi drivers rob the visitors and leave them in a lonely place. 2 pakistani ppl had come to india a week ago. they visited many cities. no problem. but when they came to delhi, the taxi driver robbed them. he didn't do anything else coz they were not english or americans. cases of asaulting and molesting of foreigners by taxi drivers come daily in the newspapers.
