A Dot In Yahoo!

If you log into Yahoo mail, there is a new ad campaign going around. That is the inclusion of the dot. Dot, where? My preference switched over from Yahoo Mail to Gmail for quite some reasons and the dot is one of the main reasons too.

So, the new ad campaign is all about building some more Yahoo user base by adding a dot in the email ID like Bush.Kerry@yahoo.com. I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but this I know, is right on target over one of GMail's advantage.

When I was wondering about the possible set of users who may sign up newly, one of my friends signed up a new Yahoo email ID for his kid with first name and last name with a dot inbetween:)! Okay! A new set of Gen Y & Z may sign up. Then ofcourse, Yahoo fans will do! Why not another meaningful Yahoo email ID with a dot? And then another friend signs up an ID, with his name dotted with his fiancee's name! There goes a huge head count who want to join not only their hands but their names too with dots! Wow, that sure is a great initiative from Yahoo, though following Google!

Well, here is another reason, why I prefer GMail! I don't need to refresh the page:)! A tab in the FireFox automatically reads like 'GMail - Inbox (1)' and the number keeps on increasing as & when a new mail arrives. I don't need to have a Google Toolbar or keep running my GTalk to know the arrival of a new email! Yahoo!, you listening?

Well the Yahoo! mail beta has the feature you requested. It says "Yahoo! Mail Beta, username (1 unread message)". Check out the screenshot.

But the title is too long to show the number on the tab in Firefox. :-( Anyway the beta looks far better than Gmail. But I am kind of addicted to Gmail. ;-)

Gmail is cool with 2.8 GB space. How much does yahoo have? I am not following it these days ... not even checking it. Gmail has free POP access, so I access all my mails using a mail client on my computer. Gmail is free email in the true sense, that's why I like it too.

Hmmm. Is the Yahoo Beta rolled out? There r quite a bit of differences in preferances.
- ppl prefer labels in gmail & some others still prefer folders in Yahoo. Ppl wanna drag & drop mails to folders like in the new HotMail rather rather than Label them & Archive them.
- The chain of emails in Gmail. Not bad. But if in a chain, assume if u r replying to the last mail, when another mail comes from the other person, this new mail is placed above ur reply. Chain is arranged in time rather as a conversation (as Gmail says so)...
- POP access has been in yahoo for long long time. From 2001 i had been using tht service.

Well normally you need an invite to get into Yahoo mail beta. But I read about a trick somewhere to get one without it and blogged about it. :-) http://www.vasanth.in/CommentView,guid,46ee7808-d05b-401b-817d-ea656b77a003.aspx

Don’t know if it still works.
By the way Yahoo Mail has 1GB mailbox.

Jagan is the POP access in Yahoo free? I thought only POPing out other accounts into Yahoo was free. But POPing out Yahoo Mail itself was still charged.

Anyway the more reasons for me to stick with gmail is that I was just invited in to their hosted gmail beta. Now I access the mails in my domain vasanth.in using gmail interface. It is about a 1000 times better than the client given by my web host.

Want to test Yahoo Beta? Here is a 2 minute step vice procedure to get what you want.

2) On the right top corner you will find "Options". Click it.

3) Click on Account Information on the left hand side bar.

4) Click ont he 'edit' tab at 'Member Information section' and go to general preferences (Third section from top).

5) Click on preffered content and select Germany, France or any other european country (UK too will work).

6) Save the options and relog into your mail account and you will have a screen which says "Welcome to Yaoo beta" Click the "Try button" (In case you chose french of german, then click on the orange button on the right).

7) Go back to options and revert back to your normal prefered content.

If you are not satisfied by Yahoo beta you can always switch back.

i have to say jags, that u r very fast in replying the comments. this is the only method thru which u can use yahoo beta WITHOUT INVITE. in my next comment i'll tell you how to use GMAILSYNC- data backup. and u can even configure your gmail.

hey...
the Gmail Sync function is another way of mailing urself the important data backups...
these mails will come right to ur inbox...and since u dont hav the folder function in gmail...it is a pain to locate ur data among a mountain of mails..!!
Gmail drive is a better option...it doesnt hav this restriction of 10 MB that gmail gives on its attachments..!!
and u can access that data from any computer having gmail drive installed..!!
so its like streamload..but a more reliable form of it..!!
Stay Connected..(atleast to back-up data..)
Billoo.
